JR Pass holders should reserve a seat, free, at any office or machine; the train carries reserved and non-reserved cars, and autumn and crab-season weekends fill from Kyoto. Without a pass the one-way fare is roughly ¥4,800–5,000 with a reserved seat (about US$32–33), a little cheaper unreserved. Buy lunch in the station before you board — the onboard options are minimal, and Kyoto Station's bento floors are an attraction in their own right.

Ride via the Hozukyo gorge

Sit on the right side leaving Kyoto for the gorge. After Kameoka the train settles into the Tamba farm country, calls at Fukuchiyama and Toyooka, and finishes along the Maruyama River into Kinosaki-Onsen Station; stay aboard to the terminus. The gorge stretch alone is worth choosing a daytime departure for, and it comes at no surcharge on a ride you are taking anyway rather than as a separate sightseeing fare.

Station to your inn

The station faces the foot of the town, with Satono-yu beside the exit and every ryokan a 5 to 15 minute walk up the canal street.

Inn shuttles meet trains on request, and the station's luggage-forwarding counter delivers suitcases for a few hundred yen, so the arrival walk stays a stroll rather than a cargo haul. There are no taxis, buses or decisions required — the town is the corridor. Travellers combining Osaka and Kyoto can arrive on the Kounotori and leave on the Kinosaki, two interchangeable halves of one trip with no backtracking, both covered by the JR Pass.

If the direct timings do not work

Ride any San'in line express to Fukuchiyama and change there for the last hour into Kinosaki. The connection is timetabled and signposted, and the penalty is usually twenty to forty minutes rather than an afternoon. ⚠️ Confirm the onward departure before leaving Kyoto — the Fukuchiyama connections thin out after mid-afternoon.
